WILL COVID-19 HAVE A LASTING EFFECT ON HOUSE DESIGN?

news.php?id=80

While the global outbreak of Covid-19 has touched all of us and every industry, not least the world of house building, what many have experienced, perhaps for the first time, is working from home.

For some this prolonged period of home isolation has meant we’ve needed to create somewhere in the house where we can properly work, somewhere other than perching on the sofa with a laptop while the kids do their morning PE session with Joe Wicks!

What the home worker needs to be truly successful is dedicated space. Over the ten years that Alfred Homes have been building throughout Winchester we have, where possible, incorporated this sort of space into our specifications. Sometimes with children in mind it’s been a neat homework area in a family kitchen, a good-sized study or expansive rooms on top floors; properties that have been snapped up by the already committed home worker.

Our three new homes under construction in Shawford (and all recently sold or reserved), follow this trend with ground floor studies plus well-planned, third floor accommodation including a large games room that makes an excellent office.  We have also created extra space above the double garages.

We have similar designs at our current development of 11 properties at Meadowlands in Winchester, making home working a viable option, not least because these homes are also conveniently located close to the mainline station for those essential trips to the city.

There are many pundits who are predicting that Coronavirus will have a lasting effect on all of us. We believe that by incorporating home working spaces into our designs we are future-proofing for a world where remote working might well become the new normal.
